Oil changes are not only a routine part of vehicle maintenance, but they are also incredibly important to the overall safety and performance of your car. That’s especially true of a high-end car like a Porsche. Owners who fail to regularly check their oil are risking the health of their engine, which can cost them thousands of dollars in repairs down the road.

That’s why it’s important for you to know the biggest warning signs that pertain to your car’s oil — and how to address them.

Signs That It’s Time for an Oil Change

If you notice any of the following signs, you should bring your car in for an oil change as soon as possible.

Oil warning light comes on

One of the easiest signs that your oil needs to be changed is if the oil maintenance light comes on your dashboard. On some models, this light might come on after a certain amount of miles or after a particular time period, but usually, the light will be triggered by low or poor oil levels. It’s best to double-check your oil via the dipstick when the light comes on.

Oil looks dirty and dark

Fresh oil is amber in color and is slightly translucent. Over time, as the oil collects debris and particles from the engine, it can become darker and dirtier. Check your dipstick at least once a month to ensure your oil looks fresh. If you notice a milky residue on the dipstick, then you might have serious engine problems and should bring your car in for service immediately.

Smoke comes out of the exhaust

Normally, your exhaust pipe will emit a light vapor while it’s running. Once you start noticing that dark smoke is coming out, an oil change might be necessary. You may also notice a burning smell when you first start your car, which is another indicator of poor or low oil levels.

Loud noises are coming from the engine

The purpose of motor oil is to keep your engine lubricated. With low oil levels, your engine will begin to make knocking or ticking noises because of the machinery and components grinding against each other. If you hear these noises frequently, you will want to check your oil right away.
