What to Do in Rye, New York

Learn and Play

On the Rye Free Reading Room event calendar, you can find daily activities organized right in your hometown library. Bring your kids to any of these weekly sessions featuring stories, music, dancing, and other playful activities that’ll teach your child a variety of essential skills in a fun, social environment.

  • Mother Goose Monday: Offering sessions on Monday mornings, “Granny Jean” Klein teaches infants and toddlers different nursery rhymes and songs with a host of friendly puppets.
  • Chloe’s Sing and Sign: Chloe holds sessions on Tuesday mornings to teach children basic American Sign Language (ASL) through song and dance. Chloe uses repetition and sequences to help your child learn and practice different letters, words, and phrases of ASL.
  • Wiggle Giggle Time: Give your child the opportunity to play, dance, and interact with other kids during Wiggle Giggle Time with “Dawny Dew” Halasz. Designed for toddlers and preschool children, Dawny Dew engages your child with music and funny rhymes for a morning of fun.
  • Tales for Tots: Every other Thursday, the library hosts this session to encourage language development, creativity, and a love for stories in your child through picture books, fingerplays, nursery rhymes, and more.
  • Marilyn’s Musical Maracas: Through songs and rhymes, Marilyn Castillo will teach your child about Spanish language and culture while strumming along with her guitar.
  • Graham Clarke’s Musical Fridays: Your children will love moving and grooving to the beat with popular children’s musician Graham Clarke. And, on a nice day, your children can enjoy singing and dancing with Graham outside on the village green.

Experience Virtual Reality

On Fridays from 3 p.m.–5 p.m., you and your older children can step into the world of virtual reality experience at RyeTV. Contact the station to register and sign up for a time slot upon arrival and get the chance to encounter the HTC Vive headset firsthand. Climb to the top of Mount Everest, compete in the Formula E auto racing championship, build a sky fortress in Minecraft, and more with VR.
